MADD Upset About State Fatality Rate

December 18th, 2007 · 1 Comment

MADD, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, is claiming that Wisconsin has an unacceptable rate of fatal crashes. They claim that the state has an exceedingly high rate of crashes compared to other states.

The group determines their data by dividing the number of fatal accidents in which alcohol played a factor by the total number of fatal accidents. By this determination, Wisconsin has the highest percentage of drunk-driving related deaths at 42.1%. That translated to 305 deaths in 2006. Despite their unhappiness at this statistic, they were pleased to report that that is a 5% decrease from 2005.

The group also feels that Wisconsin’s drunk driving laws need some tweaking. They want more progressive punishments. Also, Wisconsin is the only state that does not make a first offense a serious crime. Also, MADD wants checkpoints implemented in Wisconsin, along with a number of other states.

MADD has a point though I feel MADD is a bunch of crazed people.. they need to wake up there are OVER 40THOUSAND deaths a year and drunk drivers are only 1/3 of them.. the rest is caused by stupid negligent drivers.. Why isn’t anyone up in arms about the other people killed? I’m not saying that drinking and driving is acceptable but come on when it’s only a pin point on the statistics and nothing is being done about the other crashes there is something WRONG!
I hope they change the laws in WI but not only for drunk driving but for ALL Deaths in crashes!
Speeding is the #1 killer in more then 3/4 of deaths!
