Two Wisconsin nursing homes have made the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) list of the Nations Top 54 Worst Nursing Homes.
Luther Home and Willows Nursing and Rehabilitation in Sun Prairie are on the first-ever public ranking of the country’s 16,000 nursing home conducted by the federal government. CMS has said that the 54 worst will work with federal and state agencies to improve their facilities. Facilities that do not make sufficient progress will be dropped from Medicare and Medicaid lists of approved nursing homes. The two federal health insurance programs are a major source of income for long-term care facilities.
The acting director said the agency developed the list because many facilities are caught in a yo-yo cycle. They improve facilities enough to pass one federal review and then fail the next one. They never fix the underlying problems.
Senator Herb Kohl praised the actions of the CMS.
